Job Descriptions for Presidential Cabinet Members

The United States cabinet includes the vice president and the heads of 15 departments. Cabinet members advise the president on issues relating to their departments.

Vice President of the United States

The vice president breaks ties in the Senate and assumes the presidency if the president dies.

Departments of State, Treasury and Defense

The Secretary of State negotiates with foreign representatives. The Secretary of the Treasury monitors national debt and recommends financial policy. The Secretary of Defense oversees the armed services.

Departments of Justice, Interior and Agriculture

The Attorney General is the nation's top law-enforcement officer. The Secretary of the Interior oversees the management and conservation of public lands. The Secretary of Agriculture oversees farming, agriculture and food.

Departments of Commerce, Labor and Health and Human Services

The Secretary of Commerce oversees patents, trademarks and censuses. The Secretary of Labor is responsible for occupational safety, wage and hour standards, unemployment insurance benefits, and re-employment services. The Secretary of Health and Human Services oversees the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health.

Departments of Housing and Urban Development, Transportation and Energy

The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development oversees housing programs, such as the Federal Housing Administration. The Secretary of Transportation is responsible for air, maritime and surface transportation standards and missions. The Secretary of Energy oversees the nation's nuclear weapons program, radioactive waste disposal, domestic energy production and conservation, and energy-related research.

Departments of Education, Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security

The Secretary of Education establishes policies on Federal Aid, collects data on schools, and ensures equal access to education. The Secretary of Veteran Affairs oversees veterans' benefits and the administration of those services to veterans and their spouses. The Secretary of Homeland Security protects the country from terrorist attacks from the civilian sector and responds to natural disasters.
