Find a Job in Singapore

For global job seekers, the tiny Southeast Asian city-state of Singapore offers a stimulating work environment. As the government notes on its Contact Singapore website, the island led a 2013 World Bank Survey of international economies as the world's easiest place to do business. Singapore is the world's busiest port, as well. Low tax rates, aggressive investment in technology and a reputation for stability all combine to ensure Singapore's continuing popularity among international applicants.

Find Your Vacancy

Start your job search by creating an account with the Contact Singapore website, a portal co-sponsored by the Singapore Economic Development Board and Ministry of Manpower. The site says opportunities abound within industries including biomedical sciences, financial services and health care. You can search the "Key Industries" tab or various links to executive search firms and resources like the Career Resources Centre for Expatriates. Most employers also post jobs online, so targeting specific companies through venues such as "The Straits Times" -- the country's leading English-language newspaper -- is a good idea.

Focus Your Search

The type of job you're seeking often determines the search process. For example, candidates with science and technology experience should send out resumes to the National Science and Technology Board, the ExpatSingapore.com website advises. Getting in touch with the Singapore Economic Development Board's International Manpower Program is also a good idea, since you can get details about prospective employers and industries there. The more time you invest, the more likely you'll get the job you're seeking.

Get Your Work Permit

Working in Singapore requires the right permits. For example, foreigners who show significant professional experience -- and earn $3,000 or more Singapore dollars -- need a P class Employment Pass, according to the ExpatSingapore.com website. University graduates and midlevel workers making $2,000 to $3,000 per month must obtain an S Pass. A work permit is required if you earn $2,000 or less. Don't start work until your application is finalized, or you may be fined the equivalent of several months' salary.

Watch Trends Carefully

Though Singapore pursues an open immigration policy, the government does make periodic policy changes that affect foreign workers. In September 2013, the ministry required firms with 25 or more workers to advertise at least 14 days on a new job bank before applying to bring in foreign nationals, CNBC states. Qualifying salaries for Employment Pass holders also rose to $3,300 Singapore dollars. Both rules were to take effect by August 2014, which labor analysts saw as an attempt to balance foreign recruitment with local hiring needs, CNBC's report suggests.

Other Considerations

Remember that Singapore is a highly rules conscious society, which may create problems if you skip a step. For example, the government requires a local sponsor for anyone setting up a professional practice, the ExpatSingapore.com website states. The sponsor, in turn, must vouch for your competence and reputation in a letter. Failure to submit one copy of the letter results in a $3,000 deposit per applicant.
