Strong problem solving skills are key to several jobs. The ability to understand, interpret and solve complex problems is not something everyone can do. If you evaluate your skills and take time to familiarize yourself with the options, you should be able to find a job that interests and challenges you.

Detective

One field where problem solving skills are key is crime solving. The reality might be different than the hard-boiled image portrayed on TV and in films, but you will get the opportunity to piece together crimes and apprehend suspects. Detectives, sometimes called agents, are likely to use problem solving skills. Their duties include investigating crime scenes and gathering evidence. Keep in mind that any police work will require a fair amount of writing, as you will constantly need to write and file reports.

Scientist

Scientists need strong problem solving skills. Understanding the world and universe requires the ability to recognize and subsequently solve puzzles. However, science is a very broad field, and it helps to narrow it down to something that interests you. One field that features solving of word and number problems is computer science. Programs are built by interpreting complex formulas in a digital framework. Any scientific position requires an advanced understanding of mathematics.

Accountant

Another job that requires strong numeracy skills is accounting. Accountants need to analyze financial accounts for individuals, businesses and the government. Most of the problems they encounter involve saving others money by understanding financial working and tax laws. A good accountant has a strong understanding of basic accounting principles and is able to apply them to specific situations. You can combine accounting with criminal law and work as forensic accountant, determining which financial activities are illegal.

Air Traffic Controller

Air traffic controllers ensure that flights land and take off safely. Some also monitor traffic through airspace, ensuring that planes avoid storms and do not collide with one another. With good problem solving skills a controller can prioritize aircraft and ensure that flights depart and arrive on time. Controllers monitor several aircraft at a time and convey information to pilots in the air and on the runways.
