Requirements for U.S. Postal Service Jobs

The U.S. Postal Service provides shipping for mail and packages in the United States. In 2009, the company employed over 650,000 people who worked out of almost 33,000 post offices. To even be considered for a job, you must meet certain requirements such as age, language and citizenship.

Age and Citizenship

Applicants for U.S. Postal Service jobs must be at least 18 years old to apply for a position. You must also be an American citizen, have a green card as a permanent resident alien or be a citizen of a state that owes perpetual allegiance to America, such as American Samoa. In addition, all males need to be signed up for selective service.

Language Requirements

You must be able to speak English fluently to take a position working for the USPS.

Drug Screening and Background Check

As part of the application process, all candidates will take and must pass a urine analysis drug test. You must also pass a complete criminal background check. In addition to submitting to a background check, you must also give a list of all employers you have worked for in the last 10 years, or back to your 16th birthday. Military service is included in the job history, so if you have served, you must fill out Copy 4 of the DD Form 214 showing you have been discharged.

Medical Examination

All applicants must pass a medical exam to ensure they are capable of meeting any physical requirements for the job, such as carrying packages or mail bins.

Driving Record Check

If you are applying for a position that requires driving on the job, you must have a clean driving record.

Testing

If you are selected to advance in the application process, some jobs require testing. These tests may be proctored or unproctored. Unproctored exams are taken anywhere you want, and you are not monitored while taking the exam. Proctored exams must be taken at a USPS testing site. If you do not pass the exam, there is no waiting period before you can apply for another position and, if selected, take the exam again.
