What Are the Advantages of Looking for a Job on the Internet?

A job searcher can find job listings from many sources, such as newspapers, magazine ads, signs posted outside stores, and word of mouth. A job searcher can also find available jobs on the Internet, which provides many advantages over these other options. The Internet allows the job searcher to view many more jobs than other sources allow, and also makes the job application process easier.

Location

When a job searcher uses a local magazine or newspaper to look for work, the publication often lists only the jobs that are available in the nearby area. An online job board can include postings across the nation, or even across the world, that the job applicant qualifies for. An applicant in an area where employers are not hiring can apply to jobs in an area with a hot job market.

Communication

Many Internet job postings include a way to instantly contact an employer and apply for the job. A site may have an automated system that allows a job seeker to select a job listing and turn in an application online. An employer's website usually includes contact information, such as the employer's e-mail address, so the job seeker can send a message to the employer and receive a quick response.

Research

An online job search allows a job seeker to easily find additional information about the company offering the job. A classified ad in a newspaper or magazine does not have enough space to include detailed information about the products the company sells, or the biographies of other workers at the company.

Additional Offers

Some job search sites and employer websites allow a job seeker to register and post other information, such as a resume, according to Virginia Tech University. These tools are useful because another employer that the applicant did not know existed may find the applicant's resume and offer an interview, and a company can use an applicant's online resume submission to consider the applicant for other jobs.

Exclusivity

Many job postings are only available online. An advertisement in a newspaper or magazine can be very expensive if the employer purchases ad space for several months, and advertising on a job board or a company's website can be much cheaper for the company. It is also easier for an employer to state that a position has been filled when it uses an online ad, saving the applicant time. Some colleges, such as Bucks County Community College, set up a special job board for alumni that other applicants cannot access.
