What Jobs Require Quick & Accurate Typing?

Typing skills are indispensable in certain careers. Quick and accurate typists are an asset in businesses and governments that need a lot of information transcribed. If you can type more than 200 words per minute, consider one of these jobs.

Court Reporter

Court reporters, or stenographers as they are also known, must have rapid and impeccable typing skills. They are required to record every word said in court. Two organizations certify court reporters, and each has its own typing-speed requirement for certification. The National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) requires 225 words per minute and the National Verbatim Reporters Association (NVRA) requires 250 words per minute. An associate degree is all you need to begin a career as a court reporter.

Secretary

Secretaries, or administrative assistants, need typing skills. They are often called on transcribe long dictations, draft letters to business partners or record the minutes of important meetings. In addition to having some experience, most secretaries need to be able to type at least 150 words per minute.

Journalist

Journalists definitely need to be able to type quickly and accurately. Journalists often have strict deadlines and must produce stories quickly to meet those deadlines. Stories full of spelling errors and inconsistencies because of poor typing are sure to be rejected by editors.

Translators

Book translators or translators who type the words of foreign dignitaries during public speeches must be not only multilingual, but also have superior typing skills. These translators often work with large publishers or media companies.

Professional Blogger

This relatively new career (as of 2011) requires quick and accurate typing. Blogging, which is a part of new media, is becoming an increasingly important and widely accepted form of journalism. Bloggers often compete with each other to be the first to post news stories online. To be competitive, a good news blogger must be able to type quickly and correctly.

Caption Writer

The captions that appear when hearing-impaired people use closed-caption services on their TVs are typed by hand. The caption writers, especially those who type information in real time for news tickers, must be able to type rapidly with few errors.
