What Kind of Evening & Weekend Jobs Can One Do?

Evening and weekend jobs are perfect for students, shift workers or people who want to take on a second job. They allow for greater flexibility in the day because they often don't revolve around 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours, which means someone can attend school or work a regular day job as well. You may find a lot of choices for these jobs, so it can be simply a matter of choosing the best one for you.

Hotels

Hotels are open around the clock, and because of this there are often evening and weekend positions available. The front desk needs to be manned at all hours, and this can be a good evening job if you like hospitality or customer service. But if you don't enjoy dealing with customers or stressful situations, this wouldn't be the job for you. Hotels will sometimes hire people to work the desk just on weekends, which can be a good option for students, and they often need people to help out in the bar or restaurant in the evenings and on weekends.

Restaurants and Bars

Restaurants and bars are nearly always looking for additional staff to work, as this job often has a high turnover rate. These jobs will usually require you to work late into the evening, but they can be a good option for students trying to fit work around their class schedule. Restaurants and bars often hire people on a casual basis, which means that working weekends or just a few hours a day is possible. If you get good tips, you can make a fair bit of money in this job.

Baby-sitting and Tutoring

If you like kids and are good at entertaining or teaching, consider baby-sitting or tutoring as a possible weekend or evening job. Both jobs require a great deal of hard work and responsibility, but they can be done in the evening or on the weekend, and often you will get an hourly rate that is higher than in standard jobs. You normally have to put in only a few hours per shift, which can be appealing for many people.

Retail

Much like restaurants, retail shops will hire people on a part-time or casual basis. Retail jobs are fairly basic and may involve a lot of menial tasks, but they can offer suitable hours. You will probably be expected to work weekends, but depending on the store and the location, night shifts may end around 9 or 10 p.m. Grocery stores and large department stores will often hire stock-replenishment staff, which means you could be stocking shelves instead of serving customers. This could be a better job for less outgoing people.
